The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee has criticized the Pentagon’s “middle” leadership over claims that US troops in Europe will be withdrawn.

“There are those who believe that the time has come to significantly reduce our military footprint in Europe,” Senator Roger Wicker told a hearing of US European Command and US Africa Command military leaders.

“I am disturbed by these very wrong and dangerous views that are being promoted by some of the mid-level bureaucrats within the Department of Defense.”

Although it is not known which “mid-level bureaucrats” Wicker was referring to, he warned that “they are working to get the US out of Europe, and they are doing so often without coordinating with the Secretary of Defense.”

However, neither the Department of Defense nor the Pentagon have made public any proposals to reduce the number of troops in the region.
