The UN peacekeeping force spokesman said that they were holding their positions in southern Lebanon despite warnings from the Israeli army to withdraw.

The G7 Defense Ministers expressed concern for the safety and security of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon following a series of attacks by the Israeli army.

In a joint statement issued after their first meeting in Naples, Italy, the ministers said that protecting UNIFIL soldiers "is the duty of all parties to the conflict."

"We are concerned about the recent events in Lebanon and the risk of further escalation. Recognizing the essential stabilizing role of the Lebanese Armed Forces and reaffirming the essential role of UNIFIL, we reiterate our call for the full implementation of UNSCR 1701 and a complete cessation of hostilities through a diplomatic solution to the conflict," the statement said.
